Footnote instructions: Google docs, Libre office, and Microsoft word
To insert footnotes in your document, follow these steps:
- In the place you want to insert a footnote, click theInsert menu and selectFootnote.
- Type your footnote in the document margin. When you're finished, click back into the body of your document.
Footnotes appear in the document margin on your screen, and at the bottom of the page when printed. If you'd like to see how the footnotes will look when printed, go to theFile menu, and selectPrint. Or, you can go to theFile menu, and selectDownload file as... > PDF.
To delete a footnote, delete the footnote from the body of the document, and this will delete all content for that footnote.
When you download a document, footnotes will appear at the bottom of the page.
Note that when you make a copy of a document, footnotes will be copied as well. If you copy and paste text that contains a footnote, however, the footnote may not be copied and pasted by default. To ensure that you are copying and pasting text as well as the associated footnote, be sure to use our web clipboard. When pasting the content into another document, you'll notice that the footnote content is displayed in the list of web clipboard items with a hashtag. Select that entry and selectPaste as rich text.
Libre Office
To Insert a Footnote or Endnote
- Click in your document where you want to place the anchor of the note.
- Choose Insert - Footnote/Endnote.
- In theNumbering area, select the format that you want to use. If you selectCharacter, click the browse button (...) and select the character that you want to use for the footnote.
- In theType area, selectFootnote orEndnote.
- ClickOK.
- Type the note.

To Edit a Footnote or Endnote
- The mouse pointer changes to a hand when you rest it over a footnote or endnote anchor in your document.
- To edit the text of a footnote or endnote, click in the note, or click the anchor for the note in the text.
- To change the format of a footnote, click in the footnote, press F11 to open the Styles and Formatting window, right-click "Footnote" in the list, and then chooseModify.
- To jump from the footnote or endnote text to the note anchor in the text, press PageUp.
- To edit the numbering properties of a footnote or endnote anchor, click in front of the anchor, and choose Edit - Footnote/Endnote.
- To change the formatting that LibreOffice applies to footnotes and endnotes, choose Tools - Footnotes/Endnotes.
- To edit the properties of the text area for footnotes or endnotes, chooseFormat - Page, and then click the Footnote tab.
- To remove a footnote, delete the footnote anchor in the text.

Microsoft Word automatically numbers footnotes and endnotes for you. You can use a single numbering scheme throughout a document, or you can use different numbering schemes within each section in a document.
Commands for inserting and editing footnotes and endnotes can be found on theReferences tab in theFootnotes group.

When you add, delete, or move notes that are automatically numbered, Word renumbers the footnote and endnote reference marks.
NOTE If the footnotes in your document are numbered incorrectly, your document may contain tracked changes. Accept the tracked changes so that Word will correctly number the footnotes and endnotes.
- In Print Layout view, click where you want to insert the note reference mark.
- On theReferences tab, in theFootnotes group, clickInsert Footnote orInsert Endnote. Word inserts the note reference mark and places the insertion point in the text area of the new footnote or endnote.
Keyboard shortcut To insert a footnote, press CTRL+ALT+F. To insert an endnote, press CTRL+ALT+D.
By default, Word places footnotes at the end of each page and endnotes at the end of the document.
- Type the note text.
- Double-click the footnote or endnote reference mark to return to the reference mark in the document.
- To change the location or format of footnotes or endnotes, click theFootnote & Endnote Dialog Box Launcher, and do one of the following:
- To convert footnotes to endnotes or endnotes to footnotes, underLocation choose eitherFootnotes orEndnotes and then clickConvert. In the Convert Notes dialog box, clickOK.
- To change the numbering format, click the desired formatting in theNumber format box and clickApply.
- To use a custom mark instead of a traditional number format, clickSymbol next toCustom mark, and then choose a mark from the available symbols. This will not change the existing note reference marks. It will only add new ones.

Change the number format of footnotes or endnotes
- Place the insertion point in the section in which you want to change the footnote or endnote format. If the document is not divided into sections, place the insertion point anywhere in the document.
- On theReferences tab, click theFootnote & Endnote Dialog Box Launcher.
- ClickFootnotes orEndnotes
- In theNumber format box, click the option that you want.
- ClickApply.

Change the starting value for footnotes or endnotes
Word will automatically number footnotes beginning with "1" and endnotes beginning with "i", or you can choose a different starting value.

- On theReferences tab, in theFootnotes group, click theFootnote & Endnote Dialog Box Launcher.

Create a footnote or endnote continuation notice
If a footnote or endnote is too long to fit on a page, you can create a continuation notice to let readers know that a footnote or endnote is continued on the next page.
- Make sure that you are in Draft view by going to theView tab and clickingDraft.
- On theReferences tab, in theFootnotes group, clickShow Notes.
- If your document contains both footnotes and endnotes, a message appears. ClickView footnote area orView endnote area, and then clickOK.
- In the note pane list, clickFootnote Continuation Notice orEndnote Continuation Notice.
- In the note pane, type the text that you want to use for the continuation notice.

Change or remove a footnote or endnote separator
Word separates document text from footnotes and endnotes with a short horizontal line called a note separator. If a note overflows onto the next page, Word prints a longer line called a note continuation separator. You can customize separators by adding text or graphics.
- Make sure that you are in Draft view by going to theView tab and clickingDraft.
- On theReferences tab, in theFootnotes group, clickShow Notes.
- In the note pane list, click and choose the type of separator you want to change or remove.
- To change the separator that appears between the document text and notes, clickFootnote Separator orEndnote Separator.
- To change the separator for notes that continue from the previous page, clickFootnote Continuation Separator orEndnote Continuation Separator.
- Select the separator and make changes:
- To remove the separator, press DELETE.
- To edit the separator, insert a Clip Art divider line or type text.
- To restore the default separator, clickReset.

Delete a footnote or an endnote
When you want to delete a note, you work with the note reference mark in the document window, not the text in the note.

If you delete an automatically numbered note reference mark, Word renumbers the notes in the new order.
Delete a note
- In the document, select the note reference mark of the footnote or endnote that you want to delete, and then press DELETE.
